This hotly anticipated crossover CD "On This Island," is the debut folk CD by the acclaimed Canadian Soprano who is taking the opera world by storm. Hailed by the New York Times as a “fine soprano that sings with beautiful tone, dead-on pitch and great musicality”, Ms. Hickman’s debut CD promises to be well worth the wait.
“On This Island" contains 12 traditional songs, including the hauntingly beautiful, "Cape St. Mary’s," that show the Juilliard graduate’s tremendous range as a vocalist. Produced by Anne Devine, (The Ennis Sisters), this CD is a complication of classic Newfoundland Folk songs, as well as some contemporary material by Newfoundland songwriters such as Ron Hynes and D’arcy Broderick.
With a stellar lineup of both classical and folk Newfoundland musicians including Mark Fewer, Jonathon Monro, Anne Devine, Jim Fidler and Graham Wells, the album contains folk songs from Hickman’s native province of Newfoundland. An early stand-out, "Atlantic Blue," by singer/songwriter Ron Hynes, was a must for the soprano. “I think it’s one of the most beautiful songs every written. It’s about the Ocean Ranger disaster, and I think the song reflects the beauty, struggle and heartache that often accompanies making a life on the ocean, and on this island that we call Newfoundland”.
